The Artist’s Way Group in Tokyo

The Artist’s Way by Julie Cameron.

We have all heard of it, and some of us might own the book but how many have actually completed it?

The Artist’s Way is a journey into yourself to rediscover your creativity.  The Artist’s Way group in Tokyo to support each other through that process.    Anyone is welcome to join.  All you need is the book!

I had been asked by a couple of friends to guide a group through The Artist’s Way.  “It’s so hard to finish it!” they say.  This is not a lecture, but more of an open discussion group to share experiences with each other and to support each other in completing the 12 week program.  Together we explore creative expression responses to each chapter and encourage each other.  Feel free to express what you need to express, or enjoy the privacy of the experience yourself.  There will always be someone around to share your experiences with.

We meet weekly in Shimbashi  on Wednesdays.  This 3rd group of The Artist’s Way in Tokyo will start Sept. 28, 2011 from 7PM-9PM.

We will also be setting up a peer connection to help each other and encourage each other.  You may not be able to attend all gatherings, and therefore can post on our private message boards or email to keep on track.

Who? Anyone who wants to discover (or rediscover) their inner artist, and those who are creatively blocked.

What is an artist?  Because I don’t paint. Painters, actors, musicians, dancers, writers, photographers, potters, directors, backstage and tech, website designers, lawyers, teachers, supporters of the arts, and hobbyists.

How much will this reunion with my inner artist cost? It is 30,000 yen for the full 12 weeks.  That’s 3 months of rediscovering who you are and what makes you tick, setting goals, personal and career development.

It takes 12 weeks to complete the book.  Each chapter has a topic and the entire course is tied together with daily Morning Pages and weekly Artists Dates (Lots of fun and a great chance to indulge that inner artist!), and my own creativity and personal game challenges.

Let’s make this a season of intention and pursuing our passions!

Live it,
Soness

  • The Artists way helped me to see my creativity not as something I could make a bargain with but something that existed within me at all times. It used to think I had to be “qualified” to be creative, or that I had to sacrifice something in order to achieve success in my creative work. Now I understand that to be creative is to be willing to incorporate it into everyday life and that by my being created in the first place I owe the universe something in return.
  • Soness was very clear that she did not run the group per se but that everyone had a responsibility to it and to help each other through mutual listening exercises, interactive feedback and contributing positively to the group discussions.  I especially enjoyed the encouragement and support of the group. After a few weeks it was clear who was in it for the long run. During the course we definitely bonded as we often divulged a lot of personal history to each other. Even now, although we may not see each other regularly we keep in touch and often check in on each other’s projects.

  • I would say “do yourself a favour and give it a shot. What have you got to lose?” It wasn’t an easy course to do and there were many times I wanted to put it down but then that would’ve been a cop-out. Re-connecting with one’s own creativity is something akin to creating a fine sculpture out of a great big blob of clay. You have to work at it – to critique your attitude to your own power to create and to re-program your thinking. It can be intimidating for some to think that they too, are artistic.
